We often hear two words like ‘ I have less’ Or ‘ I want more’ and rarely hear a phrase like ‘ it’s enough’, ‘ I am fine with what i have’ etc.etc. The unending desire percolates down to the extent that it starts altering our basic self. Harnessing the power of enough is one of the efficient technique to increase your ‘Happiness Index’.
The environment around us simply fail to recognise this power which is hiding itself in the plain sight. In Ryan Holiday’s book “Stillness Is The Key‘, there is a story about a conversation between two writers. Here is how it goes:
The writers Kurt Vonnegut, the author of Slaughterhouse Five, and Joseph Heller, the author of Catch-22, were once at a party in a fancy neighborhood outside New York City. Standing in the palatial second home of some boring billionaire, Vonnegut began to needle his friend. “Joe,” he said, “how does it feel that our host only yesterday may have made more money than your novel has earned in its entire history?”“I’ve got something he can never have,” Heller replied. “And what on earth could that be?” Vonnegut asked. “The knowledge that I’ve got enough.”
Contrast that attitude with the lesson that you learn from any episode of Narcos on Netflix; it is never enough. Those drug lords are never happy with the millions they make selling illegal drugs. They want more; more money that they can count, more money than they can ever spend, more money than their nearest competitor made. Eventually the relentless pursuit of more got them to lose it all. So then the question becomes what is enough?
- Does enough mean that you hit a certain financial wealth and never work again?
- Does enough mean that you never have to work for survival and can now focus your time on activities that make you learn and grow without getting you paid for it?
Narrowing down to know what is enough can become the best way to know how to spend the only non-renewable currency that you do have and that is – time.____JOE
