Hey Friends,
There are enough example around us where a highly intelligent and skilled executive got promoted into a leadership position only to fail at a new leadership role. Although intelligence has multipule dimensions, for example – academic, social, technical or analytical. Different people are good with their unique abilities which they develop over aperiodic time owing to their deep interests. But there are enough stories where someone with not so extraordinary abilities in classic sense got promoted into a similar position and had achieved phenomenal success. Such anecdotes support the wide spread believe that identifying individual with the right stuff to be leaders is more art than science.
Different situations call for different type of leadership and the most effective leaders are those who have an high emotional intelligence. EQ help to connect with people with more effortlessly and willingly see you as their leader instead of certain compulsive considerations. EQ is different from IQ and it’s an important skills to acquire or sharpen to step into a more impactful role.
Many government agencies have already started looking into these areas. The case in point is that a recent announcement has been made by the Indian Govt. It’s important to evaluate emotional intelligence before a person is skilled up in a leadership position. Today there are enough competency models which can identify likely stars for the leadership positions. Ingredients like initiative, strategic vision intellect, cognitive skills do contribute in outstanding performance and help in sing a big picture. These are particularly important but if you calculate the ratio of technical skills IQ any emotional intelligence as ingredients of excellence performance then emotional intelligence prove to be twice as important as the others for jobs at all level.
We are born with self awareness, self regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills to a certain level. However, we can strengthen these abilities through persistence practice and feedbacks from the skill trainers or life coaches.
Self awareness is about knowing once strength, weaknesses, drive, values and has an impact on others. On the other hand, self regulation is about controlling or redirecting disruptive impulses and mood swings. Empathy is about understanding other people’s emotional makeup and provide support to them from time to time. Social skills are form of building a person rapport with others to move them in desired direction.
Now the question is can emotional intelligence be learnt ..??. To my mind definitely we can improve on our emotional intelligence and self awareness. The first component in this direction is to develop an understanding of your own emotional make up.
People with strong self awareness are neither overly critical nor unrealistically hopeful. However psychological and development research indicate that nurture do play a role as well in developing emotional intelligence. How much of each contribute will never be known but research and practice clearly demonstrate that emotional intelligence can be learnt. There is a old word called maturity yet even with maturity some people still need training to enhance the emotional intelligence and sadly I know some of them quite-well.
Biological speaking emotional intelligence is born largely in the neurotransmitters of the brains limbic system which governs feeling, impulses and drives. Research indicate that the limbic system learns best through motivation, extended practice and feedback whereas other learnings governs analytical and technical ability which reside in new cortex .
EQ training help people to break their old behaviour habits and establish new ones. It also require an individualised approach. No seminar or how to develop emotional intelligence manual will not help unless you develop a honest self awareness.

When it comes to self regulation the biological impulses drive our emotions self regulation is like an own going inner conversation we have with ourselves with a feelings is important that we pic our words carefully and avoid history judgements by doing so we can create an environment of trust and fairness self regulation is important for competitive reasons there is no need to panic and its important to analyse the situation. Those people who Lake self awareness and if they make it to the top gear impulsiveness often works against them.
Social skills consist of a persons ability to manage relationship with others. It’s not just a matter of friendlyness with the people but friendlyness with a purpose to move people in the direction you desire. Socially skill people have a neck of finding common ground with people. When the time for action comes social skill is the culmination of the other dimensions of emotional intelligence even motivation contribute to social skill. Having a well developed emotional intelligence both for the individual and for the organisation make it worth the effort.
