Hello Friends,

To optimize your Deep Work time, you need a bold hack. And I came across something known as the monk-mode morning. The best part of this hack is that the execution of the monk-mode morning is straightforward. The time you wake up till noon: no meetings, no calls, no texts, no email, no Slack, no Internet. You instead work deeply on something (or somethings) that really matter and hold a significant contribution in your progression.

What makes this hack particularly effective is its simple regularity but will require a firm commitment.

If someone wants to schedule something with you, it becomes reflexive to respond “anytime after noon.” Similarly, your colleagues soon learn not to expect you to see something they send until after lunch. There’s no guesswork or inconsistency: everyone stays on the same page, and you make 3 to 4 hours of deep progress on valuable goals, every day & day after day.

Productive Conversations:

In my role as someone who regularly writes on Productivity and Cerebral Happiness, I often enjoy the opportunity to discuss this topic with different people. Recently, something caught my attention which I called a deep work hack: the monk mode morning.

From Theory to Practice:

Clearly, spending the A.M time in monk mode is the type of hack that brings the magic. In this mode, energy level is high and distractions are presumably lesser. But it’s also the type of hack that I would usually assume is not feasible for those in “normal” jobs which require them to interact with clients and chase deadlines.

As knowledge workers, we need to advocate for space so we can find the signal in the sound. As managers, we need to protect our people’s space to think, concentrate and get things done. There is a time to collaborate together; there is a time to be in monk mode. As Pablo Picasso is credited with saying, “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible.”

Not everyone is in a position to execute the monk mode morning but the growing popularity of this bold hack is yet another indication that the cult of connectivity, and toward depth, is perhaps beginning to pick up speed.

It’s a worth considering hack if your work opportunities allow you to adopt monk-mode for better productivity.

Take Care

  1. Very rightly captured. The a.m. time is when we are bubbling with energy and if we can channelise it into something productive and creative it can give so much of contentment for the day
